Why Hand-Cut Dovetails Are Worth Learning

The dovetail joint is one of woodworking's most iconic and enduring techniques. Prized for its mechanical strength and visual appeal, a well-cut dovetail signals craftsmanship and attention to detail. While router jigs can produce dovetails quickly, learning to cut them by hand gives you flexibility, deeper understanding of wood grain, and a satisfaction that no jig can replicate.

Step 1: Mill and Prepare Your Stock

The pins are the corresponding sockets cut on the second board. Place the tail board directly on the end grain of the pin board and use a marking knife to trace each tail precisely. This direct transfer method is more accurate than measuring.

Cut the pins the same way as the tails — saw on the waste side, remove bulk waste with a coping saw, and clean up with chisels.

Step 6: Test and Refine the Fit

Offer the joint up dry (no glue). It should slide together with firm hand pressure — not so tight it risks splitting, and not loose enough to show gaps. Use a sharp chisel to pare away any high spots. Work incrementally; removing too much is irreversible.
